Photo Days – What do you think?
We are under taking a major forward planning exercise to help develop our next Forward Plan. One idea is to organise a series of Photo Days aimed at enthusiasts and this was partially trialled with the Viggen day at the end of November 2006. We learnt a few things from this event but are keen to learn more and would welcome feedback on the following points and ideas. Please forward your views to us via the contact page:
1. Should these photo days be organised when the opportunity arises i.e. general movement of exhibits or on a regular basis?
2. What form should the event take, single day, weekend, evenings?
3. Should these event be targeted at individual aircraft; types of aircraft i.e. fighters, bombers, trainers, MiG day, etc?
4. Would people like more detailed access to individual aircraft i.e. cockpits, engines, recce pods, access compartments etc?
5. Would people be interested in having uniformed characters available to stand alongside aircraft i.e. maintenance people or aircrew?
6. What special facilities would you like i.e. raised viewing platforms, access ladder etc?
7. What price would people consider to be reasonable for this type of event?

The above questions are meant to prompt you and are by no means exclusive other thoughts are welcome. However please bear in mind that the regular movement of aircraft around the current site has to be carefully planned to take into account the sometimes uneven ground conditions and the fragility of some aircraft. Also some aircraft are far from complete so they may not be appropriate for detailed inspection.
We know these questions and the request for your input will lead to some perhaps unattainable ideas but we are keen to work with everyone to develop this idea in a way that benefits everyone. So over to you and please don’t be too hard on us if everything does not come off as you would like. [01.02.07]

Shackleton 50th Anniversary Event
We are hosting a 50th Anniversary Shackleton event on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August 2007. The first known flight of Avro Shackleton MR.3 WR977 took place on August 16, 1957 and from an early stage the limelight beckoned, as the aircraft featured in the Avro static display at the 1957 Farnborough Airshow. A few weeks later on September 22, 1957 WR977 was delivered to 220 Squadron at RAF St Eval, Cornwall and became the second Shackleton MR.3 to enter RAF service.

WR977 went on to serve with many of the RAF’s most notable maritime squadrons and its detailed history has been featured in two books; Shackleton WR977 – Duty Carried Out and Shackleton WR977 – Dedication To Duty, which provide a detailed insight into the operations of this particular aircraft. Event organiser Rob Lindsay is trying to establish contact with former Shackleton air and ground crew, with the aim of inviting them to participate at the two day event. When much of the museum’s Shackleton Archive material will be on display. Other Shackleton related displays such as videos; models aircraft and photograph collections are also being gathered together for display.

At various times on both days the aircraft itself will be open for public inspection, along with other selected museum aircraft, so this event is a must for all ex-Shackleton personnel. All personnel who have had any connection with the Shackleton, either as aircrew, ground crew or indeed in any associated activities, will find the event one not to miss. Participants are encouraged to bring along their photo albums, meet up with former colleagues or old friends and for two days think and talk Shackletons.

Regular updates will appear here as more details of participants are confirmed. [01.02.07]
