The first airframe was secured in 1963 thereafter the Museum was formally registered as a Charity No.256434 in 1967 and incorporated as a Limited Company No.930888 the following year. After a number of years spent preparing its permanent site on the Winthorpe Showground, a former World War 2 training base, the Museum was officially opened to the public on Saturday 14th April 1973. The Museum relocated to its present leased site on the eastern side of Winthorpe Showground during the winter of 1977 / 78 and started the long process of re-establishing its collection.
At Easter 1990 the Museum opened its first Aircraft Display Hall to the public and it provided 1,860 square metres of under cover aircraft display space, and currently houses 28 of the Museum’s aircraft and cockpits. In 1994 the trustees started negotiations to purchase farmland on the museum’s southern boundary with the aim of guaranteeing the Museum’s long-term future. Formal searches and formalities were eventually completed, allowing the purchase of 5.01 hectares of farmland to be completed prior to Christmas 1995.
In 2004 the Museum completed the construction of a second Aircraft Display Hall, which now houses 14 aircraft and cockpits. Occupying 2,400 square metres the new building was completed thanks to a grant of £453,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the fund raising efforts and donations from the members and visitors.
Other display facilities incorporate an extensive range of aviation artefacts and aviation memorabilia including:
- The Lancaster Corner
- Missiles & avionic systems
- Aerial Photography
- The Royal Institute of Navigation’s ‘Timeline’ display and associated navigation equipment.
- The History of the Air Engineer
- A diverse selection of aero engines
You Can Help by Raising Funds
We are always looking at different ways of raising funds to ensure the ongoing development of the museum. We are keen to talk with individuals or companies that might be interested in sponsoring restoration or building project sat the museum. Please contact us by email if you are willing to discuss such a sponsorship opportunity. Over the last few years we have also received several generous legacies in peoples Wills and more recently there have been several new fund raising schemes that we have embraced that you can participate in at no extra cost to you.
Gift Aid Giving through your Tax Return

We are registered for Gift Aid giving through the Inland Revenue’s Self Assessment Tax Return. This allows individual taxpayers to nominate the museum to receive tax repayments as a donation. Our unique registration number is RAH93EG and this is listed on the Inland Revenue’s website. This method of giving became available in April 2004 and this new scheme does not replace the existing Gift Aid scheme but the Inland Revenue said in their publicity letter,
“you should continue to make good use of Gift Aid to benefit your charity”.
