English Electric Canberra PR.9 (cockpit) BAPC 518 NAHR – Noteworthy
On display close to the entrance of Hanger 2 is English Electric Canberra PR.9 Cockpit 'Test Specimen Rig No. 1' BAPC 518. The unconventional nose section design, has a distinctive offset canopy that provides the pilot with an asymmetrical view; the nose section accommodates the navigator in a separate compartment. BAPC 518 was one of two un-flown test rigs that were built to evaluate the redesigned cockpit layout of the Canberra PR.9. One of the features allowed the navigator to eject from his position in the nose, should the need arise. Canberra PR.9 design principles have since influenced other aircraft such as the U-2 spy plane and some modern reconnaissance drones.
BAPC 518 was used at Brough for experiments with miniature detonating cords used on both sides of the navigator’s escape hatch. It was then moved to Boscombe Down, before being sold to the Wales Aircraft Museum at Rhoose Airport, Cardiff where it was painted silver, which obscured all the original test markings.
After that museum collection was dispersed, the cockpit was rescued from a scrap yard in 1998 by Frank and Lee Millar, who later placed it on loan with the museum in November 2000. BAPC 518 is awaiting full refurbishment and repainting as part of their restoration efforts.
The other test rig cockpit was destroyed during pressure cycle tests.
Canberra PR.9 aircraft were powered by two Rolls-Royce Avon R.A.27 engines giving them the ability to reach altitudes above 50,000 feet. They were equipped with advanced photo-reconnaissance equipment, including multiple high-resolution cameras for both vertical and oblique imagery. Infrared sensors allowed the detection of night time targets and electronic surveillance equipment helped amass high value intelligence.
RAF Canberra PR.9s had impressive operational longevity, often pushing high-altitude flight limits, reconnaissance and endurance. The type remained in service until 2006, with their last operational service being during the Afghan Conflict.
