WE177 Nuclear Weapon Loan

Some years ago our then Groundsman, Nigel Bean was in contact with the AWRE at Aldermaston with the aim of getting an inert WE177 on loan for the museum.

The loan, due to various circumstances, including Covid, was never completed.

Purely by chance the person who was the original contact at that time at AWRE had just returned to the establishment after some years working elsewhere, when they were again contacted about the loan earlier this year.

With correspondence restored and details sorted to everyone’s satisfaction we are pleased to advise that a WE177A arrived on Monday 21st October, 2024; this complements our Yellow Sun and Blue Steel.

The WE177 will be displayed indoors next to the Sea Harrier, which was one of the aircraft types at the museum capable of carrying the weapon. The Avro Vulcan, de Havilland Sea Vixen, Blackburn Buccaneer and SEPECAT Jaguar were the others.

Special thanks to the staff at AWRE for agreeing to this loan and to the staff at the Newark & Notts Agricultural Society for helping with offloading the WE177.
